A darkly thrilling take on the fashion world, #FashionVictim is Heathers meets The Devil Wears Prada..
Fashion editor Anya St. Clair is on the verge of greatness. Her wardrobe is to die for. Her social media is killer. And her career path is littered with the bodies of anyone who got in her way. She’s worked hard to get where she is, but she doesn’t have everything.
Not like Sarah Taft. Anya’s obsession sits one desk away. Beautiful, stylish, and rich, she was born to be a fashion world icon. From her beach-wave blonde hair to her on-trend nail art, she’s a walking editorial spread. And Anya wants to be her friend. Her best friend. Her only friend.
But when Sarah becomes her top competition for a promotion, Anya’s plan to win her friendship goes into overdrive. In order to beat Sarah…she’ll have to become her. Friendly competition may turn fatal, but as they say in fashion: One day you’re in, and the next day you’re dead.
Welcome to the cutthroat world of fashion… no seriously, you may actually need to be concerned about murder if there’s any truth in this dark comedy. As the marketing says, this book truly is Heathers (one of my top 5 favorite movies, in all of its ‘80s gloriousness – hey, no judgment) meets Devil Wears Prada… maybe with a dash of You by Caroline Kepnes (just a good amount…personally, that one was just too much for me) and Dexter. Plus, the first murder occurs by putting a stiletto through the head. To be honest, that summarizes everything you need to know IMHO. Plus, there are so many fantastic one liners that I’m just LIVING FOR.
Ugh, I needed to up my meds. Kumbaya shit didn’t work in real life.
The story follows Anya, a girl that’s overweight in the fashion industry (at 5’4” and 130 lb – insert eye roll here) and positively obsessed with Sarah, the perfect, blonde prototype of what a fashionista should be. So how does she attempt to win Sarah’s graces? By murder, of course. Anya has a dark past and the more you learn about her, the more twisted she becomes. And that ending?! “Totes” didn’t see that one coming! This story was so witty, wry, and sarcastic, and O-M-G I can’t even begin to say how perfect it was for me. I TORE through this novel, laughing out loud, gasping, and dying to know what will happen next. I’ll be honest, it takes a healthy dose of realizing that this is a book and not real life (a shock, I know), so some proponents will seem far fetched. Again, it’s satirical dark comedy, it’s not that deep.
I heard the fantastic rumor that E! plans to release a pilot of this, and I only hope it captures the dry, sardonic humor that the author employees. If my description sounds like it’s up your alley, you must get your hands on a copy September 11, 2018. Thank you so much to Crooked Lane for providing me with my advance copy. It’s my pleasure to share my own thoughts and opinions.
