Meet Cute by Helena Hunting – Book Review

Raise your hand if you’ve ever dreamed of bumping into your celebrity crush, and him ultimately falling in love with you. If you’re not raising your hand… well, I think you’re lying.

The New York Times bestselling author of Pucked and The Good Luck Charm delivers a Hollywood happily-ever-after where a famous heartthrob falls for his ultimate fangirl in this sexy standalone romantic comedy.

Talk about an embarrassing introduction. On her first day of law school, Kailyn ran – quite literally – into the actor she crushed on as a teenager, ending with him sprawled on top of her. Mortified to discover the Daxton Hughes was also a student in her class, her embarrassment over their meet-cute quickly turned into a friendship she never expected. Of course, she never saw his betrayal coming either…

Now, eight years later, Dax is in her office asking for legal advice. Despite her anger, Kailyn can’t help feeling sorry for the devastated man who just became sole guardian to his thirteen-year-old sister. But when her boss gets wind of Kailyn’s new celebrity client, there’s even more at stake than Dax’s custody issues: if she gets Dax to work at their firm, she’ll be promoted to partner.

The more time Kailyn spends with Dax and his sister, the more she starts to feel like a family, and the more she realizes the chemistry they had all those years ago is as fresh as ever. But will they be able to forgive the mistakes of the past, or will one betrayal lead to another?

My thoughts

I had been hearing about this book from so many bookstagram friends, and once I saw it on an Amazon special, I took the plunge and snagged a copy. What I assumed would be a very superficial rom-com actually turned out to be much deeper and emotional. The characters stole my heart – especially Emme. I could just picture the 13 year old, trying to navigate the world without her parents and being thrust into a custody battle between her older brother (who, let’s just say hasn’t always been shown in the public light as a qualified caregiver) and her aunt (we’ll just not go there).

While the overall plot becomes somewhat predictable – you can easily pick up on some of the twists in the story – it was a captivating, entertaining read that was exactly what I needed to detox from some of my darker mysteries/thrillers that I’ve recently gravitated towards.

If you’re looking for a beach read with a little more depth than your average romance (but still with a touch of steam), I definitely recommend getting your hands on a copy of Meet Cute by Helena Hunting! I can’t wait to check out some of her other reads going forward!.
