TTT: 9 Books I’m Not Interested In Reading (Because I Like When The Dog Lives)

Light Salmon Square Leaves Pattern Girls Weekend Ideas Blog Title (2)

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

I think we can all agree, any time a book has a dog character, its the best. But if the author is an evil person who enjoys emotional manipulation, and they decide to write in the dogs death….*gasp*…

Some of these we have read, and some we haven’t..either way, we’re here to protect you from making the same mistake we did. Unless you just like torturing yourself or need a good cry and well, these would do the trick.

27276262Lily and the Octopus by Steven Rowley

So this cover is beautiful and I love a dachshund but as soon as I saw that this sweet baby dies, NOPE. NO THANKS.

12691Marley and Me: Life and Love With the World’s Worst Dog by John Grogan

Growing up, my family always had white and yellow labs for the family pet. They’re sweet, good-natured and will chew up anything that isn’t locked down. That said, I wanted to read this book but then with a simple Google search, it was placed back on the shelf, never to be picked up again.

7723542A Dog’s Purpose (A Dog’s Purpose #1) by W. Bruce Cameron

I actually didn’t know this was a book until I heard about the movie..I still know nothing about it-other than the only thing that matters.

16143347We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

So this book isn’t based around a dogs life, which is a good thing SINCE IT DIES, but I read it not knowing this so SAVE YOURSELF AND STAY AWAY.

The Guardian by Nicholas Sparks

The last Nicholas Sparks book I ever read. What a jerk.

3153910Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein

I was glutton for punishment, that’s my only explanation. I KNEW what was going to happen but I kept hearing all these amazing things (and I still gave it 4 stars on GoodReads) but crying on public transit isn’t cute so unless you’re into strangers trying to hug you, just don’t.

598117Sounder by William H. Armstrong

This novel sounds so interesting and yet…you just know what happens. It won a Newberry Medal so I’m guessing it’s an incredible story. But I can’t.

14064I Am Legend by Richard Matheson

Again, knew about the movie before the book and watched and hated it (for many reasons) but yeah, you can’t do that to me, Will.

817982Stone Fox by John Reynolds Gardiner

I read this as a child…and it ruined me. I still think of it as the single most depressing ending to a book. I ugly cried so bad that I probably developed wrinkles as a 5th grader.

  1. I 100% agree with you. I can’t deal when the dog dies in movies/books. I’m a vet so I have to deal with this on the daily! When I read what Lily and the Octupus was about I started getting teary eyed. NOPE NOPE NOPE. I will not read about that sad crap!!

    1. omg bless you. i could NOT be a vet for that reason!! I heard such good things about Lily and the Octopus but as soon as I saw that cover, I knew it was going to be a heartbreaker!

  2. I hate books where animals are treated badly. I can’t think of a title now though, just happy it doesn’t happen a lot. I didn’t read any of these but saw the movie Marley & Me and I wasn’t expecting this ending. I thought American movies had happy endings. I never want to watch the movie ever again, it broke my heart!

  3. I also like when the dog lives so I won’t be reading any of these books.

I stay away from horror books and books with vampires and zombies – I’m easily grossed out and easily freaked out so none of those please.

    have a lovely day.

    1. I don’t read horror books or anything gory at all! I once read a James Patterson book…”Swimsuit” maybe? and it almost killed me it was so bad

  4. Grizelle’s Bucket List has a sad ending too, but I thought it lovely that a human would create a Bucket List for her dying Bull Mastif. Things like having an ice cream at the beach, walking on snow… Simple things. It is something I would like to put in place for any future pet dogs, I think.

    1. I haven’t heard of that book but you’re right, that’s such a sweet idea…although, I’d probably spend the whole time crying thinking about it being their bucket list!
